Girls' Own Big Weekend

It's been a big, busy weekend for VB and I. Yes, we're totally rockin' out here in the suburbs, the weather has suddenly improved this week, bringing with it a fresh surge of energy for all sorts of activities.

Since my 6-degree morning a couple of weeks ago, the heater has now been packed away, winter stock has been pulled from the racks and put into storage and my little sunroom, so cosy to inhabit during winter daytimes, is now almost unbearable after 9am and will continue to be so for the next 8 months.

Saturday morning saw a fair spot of vintage treasure hunting- and finding!

Above and below, just some of what I bought, minus the sunnies obvs.

My most exciting find was an old razor strop (on the basket behind the phone), they're not worth a lot but the lady I bought it from said it belonged to her father who had been a barber, and it was his all-time favourite.

Still rockin' on Saturday night, we went to some far-off 'burbs for a (adults) roller skating birthday party. The old-style timber rink was awesome, to my mind so much better than the modern concrete equivalents. This was only VBs second time skating and she absolutely loves it, even insisting on entering the skating limbo comp, I wish I had a photo of us going under the bar as apparently she looked hilarious.

And yes, that *is* a chenille bedspread I'm wearing on my bum! I'll have to show this outfit properly later, it's a bit mental but then that's the whole point isn't it.

Painting started off our Sunday, VB 'helps' a lot as you can see, note the vegemite toast on the lawn!

Midday saw us run around the corner to a local school fete, I mostly went to meet the principal as I'm looking to send VB there next year (can you believe she's nearly 5?!) but VB took full advantage of the massive slide, so big you can hardly see her at the top there.

Ah yes, here she is, not scared at all, and still in the dress from last night. They tell me it's called 'choosing your battles wisely'.

Excuse the grainy iphone pics, but we had a lucky score with clothing on Friday, what we bought was hanging over the rack on the left, so it was time to spend a few hours hanging, pricing, steaming and properly sorting clothing stock, especially as the Brisbane Vintage Fashion Fair (our biggest) is coming up the weekend after next.

The other side of the stockroom was equally busy!

As you can see, VB came home with several bags full of treats from the fete, the main prize to my mind being the fuzzy felts, I had several as a child and absolutely loved them. And yes, this is all tidy now.

Tired but happy

See you soon!

Come Up To The Shop With Me....

Something different for you today :)

A few pics from my drive up to the shop, through the beautiful Gold Coast Hinterland.

We all like to see landscapes that are exotic to us, and while these sights are not so to me, they certainly make for a very pleasant hours' drive to work.

I took all these pics while driving along so some of them have some reflection from the windows, oh well. The scenery changes from small properties, to large & neatly kept farms, to tropical rainforest.

About 40 minutes away from home now, that's Tamborine Mountain in the distance.

At the base of the mountain now.

5 minutes further on, and the trees start closing in.

Look at that weak winter sky! So pale! In fact I took these pics a couple of months ago, so yes, this is what the dead of winter looks like here.
Another 5 minutes along, and we arrive at the real rainforest part of the mountain.

How gorgeous is this! It gets a bit hard to take more pics until I arrive at the shop, this top part of the road certainly is winding.

Have a look at our beautiful garden, just out the front of the shop. The arbor there is our entry from the footpath, you walk through it and on to the path in the next pic. Follow the path around behind the big camellias and you're at the shop door.
The lavender is in full bloom at the moment. We also have camellias, nasturtiums, massive daisy bushes and a few other flowers whose names I don't know, all so pretty.

Lavender pics taken today...can you tell how much warmer it is now?!

Edited to add, for those overseas.....

Fresh Finds & New Faves....All For Me!

The title pretty much sums it up....this is what I have acquired for myself over the past few weeks.

Meet my glorious new light fitting!

It's mine by default, and free; it was intended for the shop, being a glorious 60s original glass-panelled beauty...unfortunately one of the panels smashed in transit, so I get to keep it, yay!

I've had it sitting around for a couple of months but finally fixed it; as usual, anything for myself takes a while to get fixed. Please excuse the fuzzy pic, I couldn't keep my hands still enough with the camera at such a height.

50s plastic salt and pepper set

Retro print, many of you will recognise this one.
I like the fact that it has some colour loss around the edges, I think it adds to the rustic theme.

Awesome 50s magazine rack, in excellent condition, just needs white ball feet if I can find them.

it fits in with my taste for black and white stuff too, yay!

Two 1960s embroidered pictures
I bought these at my local flea market from a lady whose mother had made them, she had tears in her eyes as I walked away with them, but she was glad they were going to someone who will look after and appreciate them.

I know this needs a shade and quite a bit of work, but to me this is a fabulous atomic lamp!

The red part simply slides out of the base, so I can repaint the whole thing a different colour...which I'll do when I decide what colour I want it to be.

Lastly, a saucer or coolie chair, child-sized and of course perfect for VB! As you can see it's already in the lounge room, adding to the 50s look I'm slowly creating.

Yes, slowly....but I'll get there one day!

What 50s beauties have you bought lately??
