Remember about 10 days ago when my market day was a washout? It's been raining on and off ever since, but during the past week it's been day and night, almost non-stop. All the rivers and creeks are at breaking point, the dams are just about to overflow, cars are being washed away down streets, roads losing their bitumen, factories suffering millions of dollars damage....all that sort of stuff.
View from my back porch this afternoon, during a very temporary dry spell. Those clouds covering the hills in the distance closed in fast not long after I took this - I can usually see them clearly.
Which wouldn't be so bad, if some &+*!@! person had had the foresight not to build Brisbane inland on the flood plain of a very major river. D'oh! It doesn't rain here much-never anything like this- but when it does rain properly there's always a lot of damage. Me, I'm okay. My house is up on stilts anyway, being a Queenslander, so there's no worries there, but according to the news a major flood is disctincly possible.
Ok, rain rant over, back to the indoor pursuits!
A spot of pie-baking. If the colours below look a bit odd it's just from the lighting.
This is my favourite, an almost-vegetarian pie with puff pastry, spinach, tomato, mushrooms, chorizo, cheese, stuffed olives, sweet potato, zuccini, habanero chillies, eggs, silver beet and polka dot corn.
A bit of photo-taking. I love the Deco lines on this bakelite box.
Lots of Commonwealth Games-watching. Lots of countries in it, aren't there? Exacerbated by being quite ill with a sore throat/cold/headache/and all that. Maybe STM/Fiona's germs have osmoted through to me? Suspect I am getting a bit raving and delirious here, but we all have our moments so I know you'll handle it.
I've warned you before, when there's any Olympics or Comm. games on, I transform into some sort of sports-mad person. I don't watch the boring stuff like boxing, lawn bowls, rugby, tennis, badminton, table tennis...ugh! Just track and field, swimming and diving. And by the way, AUSTRALIA IS KILLING EVERYONE. They are lucky I'm not on the team, being that I'm certifiably the most hopeless person at sport, ever.
Some VB-wrangling. Here she is trying to get up on my knee while I take photos. Which is not convenient.
I also managed to have a bit of a look at this book which I picked up bargainously cheap last week, and will keep as a reference. It was first published in 1957, with a second edition in 1968 and a third in 1977.
So there's a variety of interiors shown here - 50s, 60s and 70s. I love the piping on these wingback chairs, although this is not my ideal loungeroom look.
Charles Eames' own house! Unfortunately most of the photos are in black and white, which is really not handy for blogging.
Here's a closer look, because I think there's some fabulous pieces here, like the sculpture thingy in the foreground.
This 60s/70s colour scheme is not what I'd choose for my house, but I kinda like it.
Finnish design. 'nuff said.
I'm not sure quite how old this one is. Check out the height of the chimney - quite amazing. The side tables look like all the Danish/Scandinavian teak that is so popular at the moment. Do you think they've got enough ashtrays out??
I quite like this room, reminds me of a lot of 50s/60s movies I've seen. Rock Hudson would look right at home here.
Please tell me what you think of the book!

First up, sorry if I've spread my lurgy apparently the chemist told me today the hideous sinus ache will just end up in a streaming cold, oh joy, so I really hope you're better soon!
ANYWAY lurgy aside, love that bakelite box, but I'm especially loving the look of that pie, minus the chorizo of course!
Geez that was a quick comment Fiona! You must be lying on the couch just like me :) And yes, the pie is extremely good!
Sorry to hear about all that rain, and i am glad that you are ok.
The pie looks amazing. I am vegetarian so I could make it without the chorizo. Any chance of getting the recipe???????????.
Perfectttttttttttttt, no word verification. What a relieve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thankssssssssss
Sure, will post the recipe in the next couple of days.
Love the book--and yes I can totally see Rock trying to grope Doris on that couch but she'd have slot of room to escape! That pie sounds yummy WITH the meat and I hope all that goodness helps you feel better. Hang in there sweetie!!
Southern California has the exact same weather as Australia. Long hot dry spells, but when it rains, it rains like a mofo lol... We have a lot of the same landscape plants too, as I was comparing with another Aussie friend. =) My bottle brush tree is recovering from the slash and burn the landscape crew did last year.
Anyways, love the Deco, I wish I could cook, and love the magazine photos!
Oh and get well soon!! =D
Get well soon! That pie looks delish minus the chorizo so can't wait for you to share the recipe.
Love Finnish design and that interiors book is fab. Wouldn't sit right in this house but doesn't mean I can't lust over the clean lines of Eames design.
Our boys have won Gold in the diving today! xxx
Thanks for your well wishes everyone. Vix, all Australia could get in the diving today was silver at best, totally outclassed by the Brits and Canadians! But gold today in the womens pole vault and mens javelin, yay!
